With all of the jokes about surviving a Michigan winter and the jokes about Cockroaches being about to survive anything including a nuclear blast, the two were sure to meet up eventually. In reality, Michigan and roaches have a long history together.

When most of us think of roaches we tend to think of the ones that dwell indoors especially in apartment complexes. In Michigan, roaches are both indoor and outdoor creatures. Cockroaches like the Australian roach and Woods roach are related to soil and woods outdoors. If you find an Australian cockroach inside, it just needs carried back outside.

Other roaches such as the German cockroach and the brown banded roach are going to be indoor pests that need dealt with in a different fashion.

It is always best to get the type of cockroach in question accurately identified. The specific identification will give clues that will indicate where the situation started and what is fueling it as well as how to turn the corner and reduce the population. • Direct control techniques

Roaches are omnivores who will eat just about anything available to them. They are more than happy to clean plates left in the sink overnight, forage for food below the stove surface, or pick the grease splatter off of the walls and cabinet bottoms. They don’t need large amounts of food to survive, so staying ahead of them on the food supply strategy takes some focused attention.

Cockroaches can adapt to most environments, but that doesn’t mean we should make it easy for them. Most roaches have specific temperature and humidity ranges where they are most comfortable and thrive. By reducing temperature and humidity below these levels, we can increase the reduction pressure on the population. This helps support other control efforts being applied.

Cockroaches like pressure on all sides of their bodies. This makes them more than happy to o squeeze into tight places and live in close quarters with all of their unwanted cohorts. By repairing seams, caulking cracks and crevices, and blocking entry points such as pipe chases into the wall void, we can limit:

• The number of places roaches can hide
• The avenues of access to food
• Places where othecae (roach egg cases) can be placed
• The target area for monitoring and control applications

Once food has been limited and exclusion work has been done, direct control techniques will become much more effective. There are several tools available for killing cockroaches in Michigan and the combination of such lends itself to greater speeds and levels of success. The control list includes:

• Insect Growth Regulators
• Traps
• Roach baits
• Dusts
• Misters or Foggers
• Liquid applications
• Heat – increasing the temperature above survivable ranges
• Manual Removal – often times through vacuuming
