Legitimate Case of Mistaken Identity

Ants: Tiny six-legged insects that are found everywhere on the planet. What would make Minneapolis different than any other place in the world? Nothing when it comes to ants. Minneapolis alone has over 100 species of ants. How do you know what type of ants you have? Is the ant colony you found in your home just a nuisance or is it one of the many species of carpenter ants found in the Minneapolis area?

Carpenter Ant Identification – Does Size Matter?

A common thought in bug world lore is that carpenter ants are big. Therefore, in Minneapolis, when we see a big ant crawling in the yard or in the house we automatically assume it’s a carpenter ant! Unfortunately, it’s a little more complicated than that. Carpenter ants come in all shapes, colors, and sizes depending on the type of carpenter ant and the caste (worker, queen, male, etc…) the ant belongs to. The best method for distinguishing carpenter ants from other ants is by identifying a waist with one petiole and a thorax that has an evenly rounded upper surface. In other words, just call your Rove Pest Control Ant Specialist for help identifying the ants you are seeing.

What Does A Carpenter Ant Sighting Mean?

Does the sight of a carpenter ant in your home mean that you have carpenter ants nesting in your home? Not necessarily…not yet anyway. Carpenter ants can be found indoors searching for a number of different foods. Wood is not one of them. Carpenter ants nest in wood, the do not eat it as a food source. They forage for proteins and sugars. There are occasions where carpenter ants in Minneapolis will have a nest on the outside of the home and will be found traveling inside the home for food. While finding a carpenter ant inside the home doesn’t always mean they are nesting there, many times they are. If so, you will need a professional to take care of the problem. The longer a carpenter ant problem goes untreated, the more damage they will cause. The longer they travel into the home for food, the better the chance they decide to nest closer to their food source.

Prevention and Treatment

The key to preventing carpenter ant nesting near or in your home is to be aware of and eliminate high moisture conditions. Repair and replace wood that has had any moisture damage. If you store any wood in the garage, make sure it is elevated and allow space for air circulation. Do not store firewood against the side of or near the home. Remove tree stumps and roots near the home. Prune tree branches so that they do not touch the structure. If carpenter ants are suspected in or around your home, call a Rove Ant Specialist. There is not a “one-size-fits-all” approach to carpenter ant treatment. Let your experienced Rove Ant Specialist design the best solution for the situation at hand.
