Brooklyn Park Ants

Here in Brooklyn Park it is beginning to feel like we are in an extended state of limbo between fall and winter. One day it’s snowing and city trucks are layering the roads with salt, the next it’s raining and I can see green grass again. The fluctuation in seasons and weather patterns can make it tricky for most anyone to know exactly what to plan for especially when it comes to pest patterns including the ever-dreaded ants.

Ants Cuddling for Warmth

We could all learn a thing or two from ant colonies. They are master survivalists and truly know what it means to prepare for an inevitable winter, no matter when it finally decides to arrive. During the autumn, the majority of ant species consume large amounts of food so they can put on fat, that way they can go without eating much of anything over the course of the winter. When cold temperatures arrive an ant’s body temperature drops, and they become sluggish. When this happens, ants seek out warmer places such as deep under the soil, under larger rocks, inside buildings, etc. Ants spend the winter clustered together to maintain as much body heat as possible. Unfortunately, the central heating systems in our homes are quite attractive to ants that know they are approaching this lethargic state.

Back to the Grind

When spring starts to arrive the ant colonies end their days of relaxation and its back to work. Worker ants leave searching for food to supply to the colony. Ants are able to leave behind odor or pheromone trails so that others can follow their same path which then will lead strait to the food source.
