There are plenty of fun things to do in Framingham: comedy shows at the Amazing Things Art Center, picking strawberries at Hanson’s Farm, or maybe taking a hike at Cochituate State Park.

But, dealing with cockroaches in your home? Not so much.

Disgusting to see and sometimes a risk to one’s health, a cockroach sighting is bound to make anyone shriek. To the surprise of many, cockroaches are quite popular throughout the state of Massachusetts and, with the right help, can be taken care of with ease.

Whether you’ve only just spotted a cockroach in your home or you’re dealing with a full-blown infestation, Rove Pest Control is here to help.

2 common types of cockroaches in Framingham

There are various types of cockroaches in the USA, but the two most popular in Massachusetts are: German or American.

1. German Cockroach

These roaches are one of the smallest, and unfortunately, the most difficult to control. They’re often found in kitchens and bathrooms, as these locations contain plenty of food and water. You can find them under appliances(like a fridge, stove, or dishwasher), sinks, and cabinets.

They enjoy dark places to nest and will generally only come out at night. However, you may be able to spot one or two scatter as you turn on the kitchen light after the sun has set. Unfortunately, once a German cockroach colony has reached a substantial size, you may begin to see them scurry across the counter during the day.

How do German cockroaches get inside?
These cockroaches will bum a ride on luggage, used furniture, or other personal belongings as a way to get inside a home. They can also slide through uneven doorways or windows with too large of a gap. Cracks, crevices, and holes in the foundation of a home can also provide them with a way to enter.

American Cockroach

American roaches are larger than the German roach and are very unsanitary. Despite being found in warmer climates more often, they thoroughly enjoy the spring, summer, and fall weather that Framington has to offer. These roaches typically live and breed outside in organic material such as mulch, woodpiles, and hollow trees.

Once they’ve entered a home, they typically make their way to the bathroom or kitchen. They will seek shelter under stoves, dishwashers, refrigerators, between cabinets, and behind baseboards.

The American cockroach can be extremely unsanitary, as they often crawl through public sewage and drain pipes. In doing so, they can pick up diseases and bacteria that can transfer to food and countertops once inside a home.

How do American cockroaches get inside?
Doors with worn weatherstripping or a window that doesn’t close completely are both perfect ways for them to get inside. They can also enter a home through sinks or shower drains.
