Answers to Frequently Asked Questions About Mice

Mice in your home is a big problem. These pests will build nests, contaminate your food, and cause damage, all while spreading disease throughout your home. You may wonder how you are going to get rid of the mice to eliminate the problems they cause. To better understand how to do it, one of our Minnesota mice control experts answers some of the most frequently asked questions.

How Do Mice Get Into Homes?

Mice are not only small, but their bodies are also incredibly flexible. They can squeeze through gaps and holes no larger than a dime. Even when a space is not large enough for a mouse to fit though, they can gnaw at it until it is big enough. Mice are also very adept at running along cables, wires, and ropes and they are excellent swimmers, jumpers, and climbers. They can also scale rough and textured vertical surfaces.

What are Common Signs of Mice?

Seeing a mouse, either alive or dead, is a sure sign that you have a mouse problem. However, there are several other common signs you can look for even if you never see an animal. These include:

  • Gnawed holes in insulation, piled papers, and stored foods,
  • Wrappings or food scraps left behind, especially in closet and cabinet corners or inside shoes and boots,
  • Droppings that look like small black grains of rice,
  • Nesting materials, such as scraps of paper, or nests
  • Scratching and skittering sounds in ceilings, walls, and floor cavities, and
  • Musty or stale odors.

What Do Mice Like to Eat?

Mice will eat just about anything they come across. They are particularly drawn to plants, cereal grains, and dried and bagged food, including pet food.

How Long Do Mice Live?

In the wild, mice do not typically live for more than one year. In a protected environment, such as a home, where they have regular access to food and water, mice can live up to two years, and perhaps even longer.

Do Mice Breed Quickly?

Yes. In just one year, a female mouse can give birth to up to eight litters. Each litter typically includes five to six young. A mouse’s offspring can start to reproduce at just six weeks, meaning within months, you could have a very large infestation.

How Do You Get Rid of Mice in Your Home?

Many people try DIY methods to get rid of mice. Sometimes, they sprinkle cayenne pepper or peppermint oil around their home. While mice do not like the smell of these, they are largely ineffective. The only real way to make sure you eliminate all the mice in your home is to speak to a professional Minnesota pest control company.
