Should you do your own pest control?

If you do your own pest control and are spending money on products, there are a few things you should know.

The downside if you do your own pest control and use over-the-counter products

If you already do your own pest treatments, keep doing it. There are a few downsides to relying on over-the-counter pest products for your home insect and arachnid treatments. The most effective solution for home pest control, if you want to do your own pest control, is to combine it with a professional pest control service.

When it comes to controlling insects, arachnids, and rodents, there are a variety of pest control products that may or may not work based on what kind of pests you have and tolerances or resistances certain pests may have developed. If over-the-counter pest control products are having little effect, you are basically out of luck. When you hire a pest control service they can switch up the treatments and/or products to something else that can get the job done.

Another benefit a pest control service provides

An additional advantage for working with a professional pest service is they are allowed to use products that require a license.  A certified company can use pest products that the average home owner does not have access to. These products have some great additional benefits that over-the-counter products won’t have. For example, most over-the-counter pest control products are easily washed away in the rain.

The  products that a professional service uses have a much longer shelf life and utilize adjuvants that make it so it can stay in place even if it rains. There is also a residual and time release component to products a pest control company uses for home pest control. Depending on what products are being used, they can last anywhere from a month to several months. Your average pest control products from the store won’t last that long.

Does your over the counter pest product come with a service guarantee?

Service guarantees vary from company to company depending on what type of pest activities you are seeing. Many pest services will return between their scheduled services if there is excess pest activity for free. Rove Pest Control, for example, will come back between their quarterly pest control service if you are experiencing pest issues. If your home needs an additional treatment they will come free of charge.

Is the company that sold you the over the counter products going to come to your home and help you keep your home pest free if you are still seeing activity after you use their products? Probably not. So if you do your own pest treatments, feel free to keep doing it, and also be sure to add on a seasonal professional service to keep your home safe.
