Are These Pests Faster Than A Speeding Bullet?

Lots of pests are fast, but are they faster than a speeding bullet? Now a lot of people think of the fastest animals in the world and cheetahs usually come to the top of the list, however speed is really relative, and when it comes to a lot of pests and their size, they can be incredibly fast.

This Ant Is On Fire!

Now the speed of some pests and animals are definitely relative to their size and one these types of bugs are fire ants.  These ants for example can travel up to 9 times their body length in a second.

That might not sound like an impressive feat given their size, however if we were to put that into human terms and sizes that would be the equivalent to running at about 30 miles per hour.

Mighty Mouse to save the day

Most mice on average are about 3 to 4 inches in length not including their tails. The average top speed of mice tend to be around 7.5 to 8 miles per hour.

With the top human speed record currently held by Usain Bolt at 27.44 miles per hour 8 miles an hour might not sound that impressive, however if you were to factor in the relative size of mice that would be the equivalent of the average height male running around 160 miles per hour.

Talk about a quick commute to the office.

It’s a bird, It’s a plane, It’s a roach?

No one really likes roaches and they are definitely not something you want to find roaming around your home, but with this general feeling towards them it’s easy to overlook all the unique and amazing things they can do and speed it just one of them.

The average roach has been clocked at about 3 kilometers per hour for its top speed. Again when we look to the translation of accounting for their size, if they were human size, that means they would be traveling up to speeds around 135 miles an hour.

Spider Man, Spider Man, Does Whatever A Spider Can…

Another pest in the lead for speed are spiders. Most spiders can run very quickly and depending on the species some are much faster than others. For example the Camel Spider can move up to speeds of about 10 miles per hour.

This is already fast but again if we were to scale up their size to a human equivalent they would be moving at speeds of about 120 miles per hour or more.

Scaling Is Of Course Not Perfect

Now of course there would be a lot of factors that aren’t really taken into account here such as mass, wind resistance, strength of muscles, etc. So these top “human size” speeds might not actually be possible given a insect or pest was that size, but it’s fun to know how quickly these pests would be moving compared to humans if all things worked out and they could still perform the speeds at levels they do in their current size.
