Bed Bug Revenge?

Revenge can be a touchy subject. One man took it to a whole new level and used bed bugs as a mode of bio warfare.

Frustrations from bed bugs

Bed bugs are no laughing matter. If you have them in your apartment or home, they can be very difficult to get rid of. This happened to a man in Augusta, and he decided to take out his frustrations in a rather unique way.

Bed bugs aren’t really an issue you can tackle on your own. In most cases, you are going to need to hire a pest control service to take care of them. Bed bugs are one of the most durable pests around, and they are getting more and more difficult to eradicate.

Bed bugs are continually getting more resistant to various pesticide treatments, and many treatments have become ineffective. In many cases, when bed bugs appear in an apartment complex, responsibility falls on the landlord to resolve the issue.

Going overboard

One man went to the city to complain about bed bugs in his apartment. He said he was forced to move out because his landlord didn’t take care of it. The city informed the new apartment management of a possible bed bug issue from their tenant. The new apartment told the man he couldn’t live there in order to keep the bed bug issue from spreading.

Fearing being homeless, the man went back to city hall to get some sort of housing. When he didn’t qualify for assistance, he decided to use bed bugs as a form of revenge and biological warfare.

He released a cup filled with hundreds of bed bugs into city hall. The result was the whole building being shut down to avoid spread of the pests. It was good that the city officials did this, as bed bugs can spread very quickly and if not contained could have created an even greater outbreak.

Why this bed bug attack matters to you

Now in this particular instance, everything eventually worked out and the bed bugs were removed and workers could return to city hall, but why does this matter to you? Bed bugs can be anywhere. Most people only think of finding bed bugs in shady motels, but in reality, they can be found in a variety of places.

Of course run down hotels and apartments are where you commonly hear about them, but they can actually be found in many places from office buildings, to train stations, public transportation, hotels, and more.

Bed bugs are commonly transferred from place to place unknowingly by humans.  If you are traveling be sure to do frequent inspections of your luggage and clothing before you head home and when you first arrive in a new hotel.

Bed bugs like to hide out in the cracks and crevices of beds and other furniture. They aren’t exclusively nocturnal, but they do typically come out at night as that’s usually when their prey is readily available.

Bed bugs feed on human blood and can sense the excess heat and carbon dioxide of sleeping humans, and that’s usually when they come out to feed.

Suspect a bed bug issue?

If you do suspect bed bugs be sure to thoroughly wash your clothes and sheets or anything that may have come in contact with the bugs with hot water. Also be sure to run the clothes etc. on high heat for at least 30 minutes to kill any remaining bed bugs.

There are other treatment options that a pest control service can do to fully eliminate the bed bug issue, but as stated above, chemical treatments have increasingly become ineffective for treating bed bugs.

At Rove Pest Control, we use a state-of-the-art heat treatment where we use special equipment to raise the temperature in the treated room to high enough levels to kill all life stages of the bed bugs. This is not only safer for your home, but it also reduces almost all chances of any adverse health effects vs using dangerous chemicals.

This heat treatment also allows you to re-enter your home after a few hours post treatment, rather than having large exposure potential to chemicals that may last over several days or weeks.. Overall, you probably won’t have to worry about bed bug bio weapons anytime soon, but being aware of what to look for and what to do in case you run into bed bugs will keep you better prepared to avoid and treat any issues in your home.
