Afton Pest Control

Most towns in the U.S. deal with the same kinds of pests. For example, about every household has experienced the nuisance of ants. They get into your kitchen and into your bathroom; they forage for food and moisture within your home. They’re not easily exterminated.

Some ant species have several satellite colonies; you can kill one colony, but that does not mean you have solved the whole problem. Being aware of the kinds of ants in your area can help you determine the best way to handle the problem. In Minnesota, a few of the ant species are pavement ants, carpenter ants, and pharaoh ants.

Pavement ants are typically seen in the home during the winter. When they nest under a heated building, they stay active even in the winter. They come into the home searching for food. Thankfully, during the summer months, pavement ants search outside for food. Meanwhile, you could seal off cracks and other possible entries, or you can try to bait them and kill the colony before they become too much of a problem.

Carpenter ants are even more of a nuisance. Unlike the pavement ants, carpenter ants can cause significant damage to your home. They typically reside in rotting wood. When in the home, they will typically infest areas around the sink or window seals. Unlike termites, they don’t eat the wood—but they excavate the wood to make room for their growing colony. If they are left to their own devices for too long, your home could sustain significant damages.

Pharaoh ants are the most bothersome because when their colonies are disturbed in any way, they will branch off and create several other satellite colonies. This makes it difficult to poison them—they may end up multiplying instead of dying off. They particularly love warm climates—in other words, they love the indoors. If you think that you can keep the home clean enough to deter them, think again. They also seem to be able to survive off about anything—they even eat soap.

If you have an ant problem, the best thing you can do is to call a professional. While home efforts may take care of the ants temporarily, there are bound to be more colonies to exterminate.
