Did You Know Pests Can Be A Major Cause Of Allergies In Your Home?

This time of year as it’s transitioning to spring, a lot of people start to suffer from allergies, but did you know that a big portion of your symptoms could actually be caused from pests?

If roaches weren’t bad enough already, they can cause allergies too

According to the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology,

“The saliva, feces and shedding body parts of cockroaches can trigger both asthma and allergies. These allergens act like dust mites, aggravating symptoms when they are kicked up in the air.

The National Pest Management Association reports that 63 percent of homes in the United States contain cockroach allergens. In urban areas, that number rises to between 78 and 98 percent of homes”

Those are some staggering numbers and with warmer weather making pests more active this could be a big factor of allergies beyond just some emerging plants outside.

Again according to the ACAAI Typical cockroach allergy symptoms include:

  • Coughing
  • Nasal congestion
  • Skin rash
  • Wheezing
  • Ear infection
  • Sinus infection

With all of these issues that roaches cause it’s important to have a pest control service treat your home as part of your spring cleaning process.

Mice and other rodents can be another cause of allergies in your home

You might know that you can be allergic to cats or dogs, but did you know you could be allergic to mice and rodents as well? It’s another common allergy that people have and you probably don’t realize that could be what is causing your allergies this season.

You can be allergic to several things from rodents including their hair, dander, urine, feces, or saliva. With temperatures warming up from spring, a lot pests including mice and other rodents will try to get in your home.

Not only will you need to contend with the issues and nuisance of having rodents in your home, but also the possible allergies they can bring with them. Rodents and mice also tend to move throughout your home and don’t just stay in one place. This causes them to spread allergens all over your home.

A lot of people do experience spring allergies already, so it can sometimes be hard to determine if these are just from the outdoors and change in season or if they are coming from various pest issues around your home.

If you are experiencing out of character allergy symptoms or you just want to be on the safe side, we recommend at least setting up your home for a general pest control service to protect your home from the increased pest activity this spring. Keep your family healthy and safe so you can enjoy the changing of the seasons without having to suffer from unwanted allergies and pests.
